Meet Travis

At the intersection of pugilism and public service stands Travis Simms, a former 2x world champion boxer, whose journey from the ring to the hallowed halls of state governance has been fueled by a lifelong commitment to his community.

Travis began his career at a young age, driven by a passion for the sweet science and a relentless drive to succeed. Boxing runs deep in the Simms family and is most likely the reason Travis and his identical twin brother, Tarvis were already in the gym at the tender age of 5, punching away under trainer John Harris Sr. while growing up in the Roodner Court housing projects of South Norwalk on a street now named “Travis Simms Way.”

Simms rose through the boxing ranks with determination and skill, capturing the attention of fans and critics alike. His journey to greatness culminated when he clinched the WBA Super Welterweight title not once, but twice, marking significant milestones in his career. However, beyond the glitz and glamour of the boxing world, Travis's truest and most heartfelt achievements lie in his children, and the work he accomplished while serving the residents of the city of Norwalk.

Inspired by long-time Norwalk politicians and civic leaders Otha Brown Jr. and Mary T. “Bea” Brown, Travis learned the importance of serving his community in the face of adversity. Their tireless dedication motivated Travis to pursue public service, leading him to begin his political involvement in 2008 as a volunteer for the Democratic Party. His journey led him to serve on the Norwalk Common Council from 2009 to 2019, where he held various leadership roles including Minority Leader, Chairman of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Committee, Co-Chair of Personnel Committee, and served as a standing member on several other committees and boards dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Norwalk residents.

Now, as a State Representative, Travis’ mission remains unchanged: to champion the needs and concerns of his community. His dedication and passion for serving his constituents are the driving force behind his legislative initiatives.

He credits his mother, Barbara Jean, for instilling in him the values of respect, compassion, gratitude, and resilience. Her love and encouragement have been a major influence in shaping who he is today, always pushing him to do his best

In their journey of 34 years together, Travis and his wife Sandra have built a loving family. With their children and grandchildren at the center of their lives, Travis finds balance and joy in the simple pleasures of life. His legacy serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and the indomitable human spirit.
